Traversing the AI Maze in Therapy: A (Slightly Sarcastic, Mostly Hopeful) Guide from Your Fellow Traveler

Licensed therapist? Check. Recovering techie with a healthy dose of tech-skepticism? Double-check. Owner of a gloriously chaotic (but deeply caring) group therapy practice? You betcha. Researcher on a committee of therapists dedicated to upholding the ethical use of AI? This guy! And lately, my brain has been doing the tango with a topic that’s both thrilling and slightly terrifying: Artificial Intelligence in therapy.


Now, before you picture robot therapists dispensing virtual empathy (ew), let’s take a deep breath. As someone who’s seen both the dazzling potential and the soul-crushing pitfalls of the tech world, and as someone who’s dedicated their life to the messy, beautiful work of human connection, I approach AI in therapy with a healthy dose of curiosity and a whole lot of “proceed with extreme caution” signs flashing in my mind.
